Can someone please tell me what choice to put into Steam engine wire wizard for the Cotton bacon comp wire.

On another forum they said N70, but my coils do not come out at the ohms as predicted by the calculator.

My SS does as does the N80 claptons

I've never used it before, so unfortunately I have no idea what 'single material' the resistance would most closely resemble.

According to this description, the wire is a blend of "nichrome wire with a low nickel content" (so possibly Ni70, or maybe even Ni60), but "with the added properties of kanthal." The "wire type" is listed as both kanthal, and nichrome (non-specified). Unfortunately, even if you could determine exactly which nichrome they used, I would guess that the blend with kanthal would 'throw out' the resistance from the expected range of either of the materials (and the only way to relatively accurately predict the resistance would be if Wick 'N' Vape themselves had provided specs of resistance per unit length for this wire.

Cotton bacon comp wire is chromium kanthal with a very small percentage of Nickel
You won't find anything on steam engine for it..
When I used it I searched high and low on the nett to try and find out the properties of it, but sadly to no avail.

Thanks for all the effort guys, I guess it will come down to experimenting.

My favorite use for this is 24 and 26 gauge twisted which works really well. Far better than Kanthal and SS in twisted form. Ohm readings come out far less than the Ni70 on Steam engines calculator. Not a bad thing I suppose it means I can build big coils with lots of surface area and low Ohms. So far they have been a winner in the Vapefly mesh and Dvarw clone as well as the Blotto and Blitzen. They fire quickly at low W settings and are insane on a mech.

What is also nice is that you can pick up the packs cheaply and they come with cotton bits.

Well I got a reply from Wire and wick

Sorry about that Paul. I'll attach our ohms per meter below for you. Our wire is sort of unique. The majority of the makeup is N80, with a small amount of kanthal. The resistance is extremely close to N80, so you could work off that chart, but I'll attach the info below for you. The kanthal just adds a bit of longevity to builds.

22 gauge: 3.5 ohms/meter
24 gauge: 5.5 ohms/meter
26 gauge: 8.67 ohms/meter
 
Took some 24 awg comp wire and twisted it.

Made my first coil using the coil winding tool. 6 wraps 2.5 ID to get .4, spaced it and it went into the new Dvarw clone (more on that later) What a pleasure that tool is. That coil came out looking like a shop bought one.

That one according to the device after burn in and the wick burnt in as well.

You would get about the same if you parallel it but I found that they tend to spit more than the twisted.

What I like about this wire is that it is stable, I have yet to install it and have ohms jumping around. It heats and cools quickly and you can have higher ohms for the same result as for example a clapton.

You can see from the pics how immediately it heats from the inside out, being spaced, no hot spots and being a tight twisted wire you get lots of cotton contact but also little reservoirs of juice caught in the twists. Yet to have a dry hit with this wire.

I have thread somewhere about the first time I tried the twisted. I did with pen and some pliers. I have since gone very high tech and now use a screwdriver and mole grips B;)

Did my first triple wire build, 2x26 +24

I specifically wanted this build for my Banana custard mix. I know this juice can gunk up coils so I wanted a big coil and some heat. I also knew that I would not have a lot of space so kept it as a contact coil.
What I do like is that you get little gaps with the twisted wire even though it is not spaced.

Got it wicked up nicely and the flavour is intense.
70/30 vg/pg @3mg nic

3% Lemon meringue pie
2% Banana
1.5% Vanilla custard
1% sour
1% WS23

Some of what I have learned on this forum must be sinking in. I wanted a thick creamy mouth feel with lots of flavour. A little warmer than my ADV which is very cool. Not keen on things too sweet and the sour really to my palette brings out the banana and the lemon.

Quite chuffed with myself to do something start to finish. Make my own twisted, wrap the coil, wick and install. Make a DIY juice, and after a hot Madras curry for supper, enjoy some Banana custard.

The stinkies were never ever as good as this.

I'm glad that you brought up that what one requires for the best flavour is obtained with "little reservoirs of juice caught in the twists" of the coil. In other words the greater the contact area of the juice with the coil wire the greater the flavour, everything else being equal.

This would seem to be generally agreed upon by the vaping community. Please correct me if I am wrong.

If we take your triple twisted coil and compare it to an alien I wonder what the difference in contact area would be. There are also tons of variables at play here. A genius mathematician of physicist could probably calculate the surface area which would be useful. I could then sell coils with a spec that it has for eg 25 square mm contact area. My competitor may only achieve 20mm and therefore have an inferior coil. The fact that ejuice is fairly viscous may play a role in the effective contact area. Maybe a tightly wound 38 gauge alien doesn't allow the liquid to penetrate deeply enough to cover the potential contact area. I really have no idea. Perhaps it gets hot enough to allow the juice to fill all the gaps before it cools down.

All I know is that I had my glasses on so I could see the bloody thing up close :facepalm:. It took a little strumming to get it glowing nicely from the inside out and I have mentioned before, this wire heats up quick.

I don't have the camera skills but I can tell you when I primed the cotton, you could literally see the juice sizzling in the little pockets. You would think at my age I would not have much to get excited about, but man, that was exciting :--P.

Again it is one of those things through experimentation that maybe you will find your happy place. Twisted with this wire seems to be doing it for me.

I can get between .2 and .4 with the builds and rarely go over 25 W. I like a fairly cool vape and I struggle to get that with for example the Geekvape 26x3+36 even on a single build. I have also had good results with just using the single wire builds, especially in the dual coil setups.

This building story is fun, it used to scare me, but not now. Bit like being married really, bit like worrying if you stuffed up or not when her indoors asks you to clean the windows. Is it good enough, are they clean enough, did you take too long ?

Now I could care less :encama:
