Talking about electronic cigarettes, many people might think that it was just invented in the past few years in China. Because more than 90% e-cigarettes related products are produced in China and exported overseas. However, to your surprise, the idea of electronic cigarettes were firstly given out in the early 20th century.

In May 1927, Joseph Robinson filed a patent for the first "Electric Vaporizer", saying: "My invention relates to vaporizing devices for holding medicinal compounds which are electrically or otherwise heated to produce vapors for inhalation, and the general object is to provide a device of this character for individual use which may be freely handled without any possibility of being burned, and which is sanitary and very effective and so simple that anyone can use it.” And here is the script:

In 1930, Robinson's patent was approved but never brought into the market, and the technology wihout reasearching for a few decades.

In 1963, a gentleman called Herbert A Gilbert created a "smokeless non-tobacco cigarette" whose patent was filed at that time.

(See the picture above)Surprisingly, the invention was almost the same as what we use for vaping today. The most impressive and different one of his invention was that it was originally intended to be free of nicotine, and it also didn't produce vapour like the e-cigs we use today.

The story of electronic cigarette was continuous all the time from then on. The dream of producing an electronic cigarette was actually come ture in China.

Please wait for my next article talking about the ecig history in China.
