Introduction
The UPEN is the latest device from Digiflavor, and is a pen style (looks exactly like a pen), AIO low wattage device ideal for starters, those that want a stealth vape and the MTL vapers that prefer simple convenient devices. The UPEN is ideal for high nicotine and nicotine salts e-liquid.
In the Box
Contents:
1 x Digiflavor Upen (with installed coil)
1 x Nano Coil Head
1 x PCTG Tube
1 x User Manual
1 x USB Cable
Spare Parts
Aesthetics and Ergonomics
The UPEN comes in a nice presentation box along with a spare coil, spare glass tube, spare o-rings, USB cable and user manual,. I received the Black pen but it's also available in Silver, White or Red, on picking the UPEN up it was very noticeable that it's quite a weighty little device and seems very good quality. The battery section is the colour of choice and has only 2 features, the micro USB port on the base and the rectangular fire button which has a central light strip which lights up along with the fire button surround while vaping. At the top of the battery we have a Silver ring with mini ball-bearings all the way around (these are what secures the pen lid in place), above this is another Silver ring which has a small hole either side (this is the non-adjustable airflow). We then have the tank glass followed by a silver top-cap and Black drip-tip. The pen lid has a pen clip to one side allowing it to be clipped to a shirt or suit pocket, on the top of the lid we have a pattern and "UPEN" printed on and the bottom rim of the lid has "DIGIFLAVOR" printed on. As like all pen devices it is pocket and Ergonomically friendly and i really like the reassuring weight of the device.
UPEN Specs:
Size: 126.8 x 14mm
Battery: Built-in 650mAh battery
Capacity: 1.5ml
Coil Type: Nano 1.2ohm coil
Colours: White, Silver, Black, Red
UPEN Features
Pen-style and portable size
650mAh built-in battery roughly for 400-500 puffs
Perfect for MTL vape
1.5ml juice capacity and top refill
USB charging
Pen Top
The pen top is just like a top on a Parker pen, and Digiflavor describe it as a lid to keep the top of the device clean and hygienic. The pen top is secured into position via tiny ball-bearings that surround the top of the device, when vaping the top can be placed on the bottom of the device and is secured via a magnet. The pen top has a pen clip making the device ideal for an office worker wanting a stealth vape as it really will just look like a pen and will clip on to a pocket.
Filling the Tank and Changing Coil
The Upen as mentioned is an AIO device so the tank is just an extension of the battery and not separate. The drip tip is quite a tight fit but can be removed and is a standard 510 fitting but if you wish to use a different drip tip it needs to be a short one if you still want to fasten the pen lid over the device, the supplied drip tip though is ideal for the MTL draw the Upen gives. The Upen is top-fill just unscrew the top-cap and fill around the sides rather than down the centre of the coil, the tank section holds up to 1.5ml of juice. To fit a new coil you first need to remove the glass which needs to be done with a bit of patience as it's secured well with 2 o-rings, once off the coil unscrews from the pen and the new coil can be screwed into place. I do like the fact all the information is clearly on the coil, the coils are Ni80's 1.2ohms and work along side the device from 3.3v - 4.2v.
Using the Upen
The Upen is a direct output low wattage device which will give plenty of vape time using the 1.2ohm coils, being a direct output device the power of the vape will slowly weaken during the discharge of the battery. The device is 3 clicks on and 3 clicks off and you simply press the fire button and vape. The Upen does have all the usual safety features you would expect and there is battery status indication, the fire button lights up green when the device has plenty of charge, this changes to orange with medium charge and when the light changes to red it's time to think about getting it charged. The status indication could be done better in my opinion, i like to see at least 4 tiers of indication (5 preferably) and know exactly what percentage charge each indication is.
Performance
I tend to vape sub-ohm direct lung and when i do MTL from time to time i tend to use a MTL RTA but i can still remember when i first started vaping on pens and the UPEN is streets ahead of the devices i used. Despite it being direct output the drop off is barely noticeable, it's a tight (not over tight) MTL smooth vape. The coils that you are supplied with are Ni80 1.2ohm and the flavour is very good, not quite RTA flavour but not far off. I have been testing the UPEN for the last week using it whenever i'm out and about and the flavour is still as good as when the coil was first used. The battery life seems very good, i would say about 450 puffs which using high nic will last most people all day however, i didn't time it but the device did seem to take quite a while to charge, thankfully it supports vape while you charge.
Conclusion
Ideal for a starter or someone who wants a stealth or convenient vaping device, the flavour is very good as is the battery life.
