Since I'm probably the newest vaper on the forum, only been vaping for 6weeks or so, I wonder who, if anyone is using temperature control, as opposed to power or even no control and at what temperatures are you running? So far, it seems most everyone is running power control instead, which pretty much implies you're doing manual temperature control, which seems to me to be a very much hit and miss scenario.
I'm running a few RDA's and a pair of RDTA's and since I got the RDA's initially, I've been on a temperature control bender. Using 26AWG 316L SS wire, anywhere from 8 to 11 turns on 3.5 or 4mm diameter. At the moment a Twisted Messes 24mm RDA is running 155degC with VM's XXX, an IJoy RDTA 5 is running 175degC with NCV's Trinity, another iJoy RDTA 5 is running 165degC with Paulie's Coffee Cake and lastly a Twisted Messes TM2 Lite running 165degC with Vape Africa's Roasted Hazelnut. Now, increasing the temperature, doesn't really seem to be doing too much for the flavour, which is really all, I'm after, the "stoom" is really irrelevant to me, the taste is what's important. My taste buds are probably still pretty much knackered after over 30 years of Marlboro and Camel, but it seems to be coming back... hopefully a lot more as time passes.
Anyway, anybody else care to share what temperatures you're running at?

BTW, also have a pair of eLeaf Melo 3's, one of which is new/unused and the other one I ran for a while, but since this appears to be lacking in flavour, its pretty much sitting here, half full with probably Roasted Hazelnut and doing nothing.... (also have a few other RDA's, but not in use right now... not enough mods? :) actually, enough mods... will use the other drippers to test DIY juices, hopefully soon...)

I have been running my SX Mini with GEM tank on temperature control for almost 2 years now. It is a single coil flavour tank. I think I have a SS304 coil at 0.52 ohms in there with ceramic wick. Set at 20 Joules and 260degC. But, this is the exception for me - on my one or two other regulated mods I am using wattage. Most of my mods are mech Reos - obviously not TC-able.

Vaping in the same range, each juice has it's own sweet spot ... sometimes a little higher or lower will bring this out. Increasing the temperature past a certain point will completely ruin the flavour, but that's the whole point of TC - and long lung hits :D

Hi there @Kalahari stoommasjien, welcome to the forum. Quite an introduction you posted earlier.

Regarding your question, I have basically run TC exclusively for the past year or so. There are many variations in its use and mine was initially mostly as a safety precaution against dry hits. You will find details on the various uses here>>> https://www.ecigssa.co.za/guide-to-fine-tuning-temp-control-vaping.t18206/#post-306844

Running simple SS316L builds of between 0.3 and 0.6 ohm in single coil tanks (Ammitt and Obs Engine Nano). Wattage set at 50W with a soft preheat set at 75W. Using DNA mods and curbing temperature at about 210 to 230 DegC. Each juice has its sweet spot so those are the rule of thumb for my DIY ADV's. You could translate that to about 20 to 30 DegC less on other mods such as the Evic and Cuboid, the DNA boards take some getting used to and do seem to function different to the before mentioned.

With temp control engaged at the above temps (When it kicks in) I am effectively running at about 14 to 18 Watt during the draw.

Regards

Thanks for the responses, I'm not running any preheat settings and running 40W and on one of the mods I see I have it 50W, but won't make a huge difference, I think pretty much even the 40W mods would go into temp limit within 2 seconds or so, so ramp up time is quick enough, methinks.
There was a video I saw the other day (which may have even come off a link on this forum, but not 100% certain), where it seems at around 215degC or so, bad things started to be produced by the juices used, so I'm not sure whether this was directly related to coil temperature or related to actual vapour temperature leaving the atomiser, either way, since I've moved onto this to get away from the bad things produced by burning tobacco, the idea is to ensure that the same kind of or similar carcinogens don't get generated by vaping.
The https://www.ecigssa.co.za/guide-to-fine-tuning-temp-control-vaping.t18206/#post-306844 posting is a pretty good writeup on temperature control, although I think there is at least one mistake in stating that the electron flow can vary in speed, but otherwise a pretty comprehensive read which pretty much confirms what I understood in terms of my mods and what was happening, although, not sure any of them, maybe the Minikin, but I doubt the others, have a ramp up setting for higher initial power. I also guess the temperature values, in terms of getting the best flavour, will vary based on the liquid and probably even what atomiser is being used, although I'd imagine, between one and another type of atomiser, the temperature differences would probably not be more than 20 to 30degC.
When I started with DL vaping, everything was power controlled, since none of the coils were usable in temperature control mode, I think quite a few times, the temperature of the coils was probably well on the way to 300degC, based on the perceived temperature of the vape that I can recall. I'm glad I've moved on and will unlikely move away from temperature control, since this would give the most consistent vape from a flavour perspective, I'd imagine, but for all I know, humidity and air pressure may also have an impact :)
