Introduction

The Ultex T80 is a solidly made, futuristic looking tubular single 18650 regulated device with a maximum wattage of 80w. Despite having a full TC suite and other features including setting up your own tailored pre-heat the device has a very simple user friendly interface and minimalist display. The Ultex T80 comes paired with the very interesting and innovative Cubis Max tank which rather than a coil uses a flat film called the NCFilm heater, which boasts longevity far greater than we have known in the past. Joyetech claim after long term testing of the NCFilm heater it should last for at least 3 months. The tank also has a very simple wicking method and has a top airflow leakproof design, enough said let's give the kit a look!

Aesthetics and Ergonomics

The Ultex T80 with Cubis Max came in cardboard box packaging, once opened i was met by a futuristic looking tubular device which is covered in raised textured areas. Although the device is plain in the way of it being a solid one colour device the complex raised areas of the device gives it (in my view) an aesthetically pleasing appeal. I received the Matte Black version, it's also available in SkyBlue, Gold, Silver and Dazzling, and all devices come with matching Cubis Max tank. The tank has texturing to both the top and bottom which matches the textured design on the device and just above and below the glass are thin silver bands which breaks the colour up nicely. The front of the device has a small screen at the bottom and large Black fire button at the top, the fire button has a translucent flattened bottom "V" in the middle of it that lights up when vaping, between the fire button and the screen we have the Black up and down buttons lined up vertically. The back of the device has the micro USB port towards the top, the base of the device has branding and small venting holes. Finally on top of the device we have printed safety stamps and a Gold plated, spring loaded 510. The build quality is very good and the device has some reassuring weight to it, there are no rattles whatsoever and with it being tubular it has sound ergonomics.

The NCFilm Heater

Instead of a coil as we know it the Cubis Max uses the new NCFilm heater which actually is a coil but flattened out. From the name and the picture no prizes for working out it's a thin NotchCoil that has been flattened out and not that dissimilar to the stovecoil idea but rather than circular this is rectangular and not pre-wicked so you can change the wicking time and time again making full use of the NCFilm heater longevity. Also the NCFilm is not relying on the tilt of the tank to saturate the cotton as it's placed in the base of the tank with cotton placed underneath so liquid saturates the cotton in a more traditional fashion.

Cubis Max Overview

Starting at the top of the tank we have a delrin drip tip which is a standard 510 fitting so you will be able to use your own 510's. The Cubis Max is top-fill and on top of the tank is a clear arrow which shows you where to push for the top to slide it open, it clicks into position once fully open revealing a single and quite small juice port so a bit of patience is needed when filling. The Base of the tank is where this differs from others, when you unscrew the base from the tank the 510 is left on the tank, you now pull the 510 which pulls out a circular section. The inner side of this circular section is ceramic and has a rectangular cutout which is where a rectangular piece of cotton needs to be placed to wick the NCFilm (included with the kit are several pre-cut pieces of cotton). looking inside the base of the tank you will see the NCFilm screwed into place via 2 small screws (when unscrewing the NCFilm you have to be careful not to lose the screws and again a bit of patience is needed when trying to screw the NCFilm back into position (i wish the screws were bigger)). Above and below the NCFilm are slots for the juice in the tank to travel through to wick your cotton, when placing the circular ceramic section back into the base of the tank there is a little notch on the side and corresponding cutout on the base so the section slots into the correct position. Before putting the base section back together prime the cotton, then you can place the circular section back into place, screw the bottom back on to the tank then fill.

Fitting the Battery

The Ultex T80 uses a single 18650 battery, which if fitted by unscrewing the base of the device which reveals the hollow battery tube. Just pop your battery into the tube and screw the base back on. Orientation is marked clearly inside and on the inside of the base which is good to see but the threading is slightly crunchy and can take a few attempts to get the threading to catch. Once you do get the base screwed back in place it's very secure and there is no battery rattle whatsoever.

Using the Ultex T80

The Ultex is the usual 5 clicks to turn on and 5 clicks to turn off, once on you are met by a bright but very basic display. Top left we have the resistance, top right we have the volts, this is wattage when in temp control and when in wattage the volts can be changed to puffs or time vaped in the subpara section of the menu. To the left of the display we have the battery status bar then the rest of the screen is taken up displaying your wattage or temperature when in temp control. When altering your wattage it moves in 0.1w increments up to 20w and then 1w increments up to the maximum of 80w. There are some combination key press features which are, with the device turned off pressing up and down together flips the screen also with the device off 10 presses of the fire button displays the temperature of the PCB. With the device turned on pressing the up and down buttons together locks and unlocks the device and finally up and fire enters the second menu. To enter the main menu is 3 clicks of the fire button which now allows you to scroll through all your modes which are Wattage, Bypass, Temp Ni, Temp Ti, Temp SS, TCR M1, TCR M2 and TCR M3. As mentioned before there is a second menu which brings up icons to pick from which is entered by pressing the up button and fire together. This brings up icons that represent different features which are subpara (choose between puffs, vape time or volts), stealth mode, set your preheat manually, logo, and information about hardware, software and your battery. Finally when the main screen is in a temp control mode pressing the fire button 4 times allows you to set wattage for temp control.

Safety protection

The Ultex 80 as you would expect comes with multiple protections which include
Dual circuit protection, Overcharge protection, Over-discharge protection, Reverse polarity protection, Current Protection, Over-vape protection and Short circuit protection.

Performance

As usual the first thing to mention is i do not vape in temp control and i do not have equipment to access data so simply review products as a personal experience. The Ultex T80 fires instantly and the fire button is both easy to find and nice and clicky, it gave a reliable vape and fired every-time with wattage seeming accurate. I do like the way after 20W the device alters in 1w increments and the simple to use nature of the device will appeal to many. The Cubis Max gives flavour very close to the mesh coils that are all the rage and the cloud production is immense considering the wattage i was vaping at. Obviously the biggest advantage the NCFilm heater should give is the 3 months plus longevity which obviously only time will tell but if that pans out to be accurate then the Cubis Max is a leakfree, flavoursome, cloud beast with good capacity and very cost effective to use which can be a gateway towards full rebuildables. The other things that stood out was the smoothness of the airflow and how quiet the tank was, the Cubis Max takes quiet to a new level as it is practically silent. The NCFilm heaters are 0.25ohm (my NCFilm came out at 0.28ohm) and is rated between 35w and 45w with a best at 40w, i actually found the NCFilm best at 45w, airflow half open for a restricted lung hit. The battery life seemed good for a single 18650 device running at 45w, the Ultex T80 also supports 2A charging and is firmware upgradeable.
