NB Online etiquette

I agree with @Xhale ...I used to get all worked up about the various quirks in online language use. Then I had a vape and relaxed :D

The thing is that online communities are comprised of a very large and diverse group of people who have different proficiencies with language. In the end there is only one golden rule IMHO...being able to communicate what you are trying to say. If I understand what someone is saying, then it really does not matter to me whether they use the "correct" words, spelling, tenses, punctuation, etc. Those who take offense at incorrect words, punctuation, and grammar use are usually intelligent enough to understand what the person means, otherwise they would not get upset in the first place.

In the end I do not think these should be in a thread called etiquette (which is about behaviour). These are just a part of our modern multi-cultural (and multi-language) society that we should all accept, especially if someone is not trying to be an @$$hole (those are sorted out by the community very quickly anyways).

That said, those who are able should at least try to be considerate of the people to whom language is important and who value the correct use of it.

Breathe, take a nice strong vape and just be kind to one another.
I can't agree more with you. I'm a proud boertjie, but when speaking and writing on any forum I will always try mys best to type correct, but, when in a hurry you don't always double check everything and tend to make mistakes.

That is why we all come from different cultures, religions, etc., but we all do have one thing in common, "VAPING". so surely we should also respect each other as all of us do not have the same typing and spelling ability.

And I can quote "Breathe, take a nice strong vape and just be kind to one another"

Punctuation can change the meaning of a sentence.

Example:

Let's eat Grandpa

vs

Let's eat, Grandpa.

or,

Commas,%20use%20them01.jpg

or,

Commas,%20use%20them02.png

Just saying.... :)

Posts like this just makes me exhausted. I get to the second line when it stops making sense and just move on.

What do you like?

I like cooking and, like, my family and pets, like. Know'm'sayin'?

I can sorta understand lack of punctuation/grammar/spelling due to laziness/time saving. So "ur" saves two keystrokes versus "your". What I can't understand is when the wrong form takes more keystrokes. Example: "orange's and apple's". The correct "oranges and apples" has two fewer keystrokes.

On another forum I frequent, there's a member who uses a string of commas to replace all punctuation. So a typical post will be:

I needed some groceries,,,,,,,,,,,,,got in my car,,,,,,,,,drove to town,,,,,,,,,bought a whole trolley full at Tesco.

Why is she putting in more effort to appear less literate??

Punctuation and grammar have nothing to do with etiquette. Online etiquette is, for example, not using caps because it suggests that you're shouting at the other person.

Etiquette also means being polite, even though you're online. Guess what - all the letters which are found in "please" and "thank you" can be found on your keyboard.

To me, a rule of thumb is this: If you wouldn't say X to someone face-to-face, don't say it online either.

Ok here is my dilemma, I can be a bit rude offline, and yes I do say whatever I like to people in their face. So now what must I do online? Be two faced and be all polite or just be myself?

The third one is the correct one in my opinion. He/she likes cooking and he/she likes his/her family and pets as well. Thus "I like cooking, my family and pets". It was never indicated that he/she likes to cook "for" anyone. That is how I see that sentence. I suppose you could see it anyway you like, but the third one is the one that makes sense to me. :)

Your tone has already become far more polite since your first posts. Well done! Imho there is no such thing as "being myself". We are all always a work in progress.

@Jean claude Vaaldamme I agree fully with @Andre

Being polite is important. Just remember that this is a public platform and your posts are seen by anyone - they can be seen today, tomorrow, next week, next year - and anytime someone searches on Google. So its best to remain polite and respectful towards other members. That leads to a better experience for everyone (including yourself) and it paints you in a good light.

Being polite is not really the topic of this thread though - as per the original post. The idea of the original post was to make the content on the forum readable for all and not just a mish mash of carelessness which makes the poster and the forum look bad

That said, many folk on here don't have English as their first language and some are less careful with grammar, spelling or punctuation. Most of us are very tolerant and try to read into what the message is that is being said.

This thread was just to add a bit of extra etiquette. Not to be confused with the forum rules which call for playing the ball and not the man, ie no personal attacks. If a member here has something rude or nasty to say about someone else here or has been offended, the route to take is to report the offending post and/or report it to one of the Admin/Mod Team and let us try deal with it - instead of retaliating.

Hope that makes sense and helps to understand a bit better.

Depends on the outcome you want.... fellow forum members do not know you for who and what you are.... so naturally you will be judged be means of your scribe. ( as per hooks point ) not saying it is right or wrong, but it is what it is.
And the wrong perseption will lead to hostile treat ment... that will just make your forum experience a k@k one. :punch:

Thanks, so should I report Andre's post for attacking me and my "tone">:), I thought my first post in Introduce yourself was a relaxed " tone"
He is playing the tone and not the piano

No don't worry about reporting @Andre - lol - and that was a classic chirp of playing the tone and not the piano !

I don't think he meant your first post was not polite - I just think he meant that you seem to have mellowed out a lot as you've gotten to know the members on here. And that's a great thing!

I like your posts because you ask interesting questions.

What I mean about reporting someone is if they say something that is very offensive to you or attack you personally with something really nasty.
