How do you decide on a flavour?
Well simply put, we take a spin on our lab-coat-hamster-powered-design-a-flavour-matic of course!!!
Ok, so no hamsters are actually used, but the principle is simple enough to identify as a multi layered chart:
STEP 1 - initial decision
What constitutes a good flavour ? or let us rather ask how do you decide what flavour to try? As a starting point we (You and I) usually decide if you are looking for an all day vape, an indulgence vape, or a refresher vape. Refresher here is a juice that would be an occasional juice just to reset or take a break from your normal ADV. Indulgence Vape is a juice that you only vape on those special occasions for instance. We all know what a All Day Vape is - the one juice that is always in your tank.
STEP 2 - base flavour type
What is your flavour type that you would like to vape on, should it be Sweet, Menthol, Robust, Rich, Sweet, Fruity or Earthy? This will become the overall back-note of your flavour. The easiest to identify as a theme of the flavour. You might identify a Robust flavour that you could use as an All Day Vape, while your friend might see it as an indulgence vape - so please understand that this is a subjective analysis, that will only hold true to your own definitions.
Step 3 - notes
Now comes the driving notes of the flavour - the motivation for the flavour. Each note has it’s own constituting elements all conforming to their own theme. Be it fruits and all their derivatives. Fast fact: banana is not a fruit, but a herb. The last step on defining a flavour is selecting these constituting components and balancing them for the optimum representation of step 2 and 1.
As many on the forum has had their hand at DIY, you know that the process can be a lengthy and complex affair. You might think your marshmallow vanilla custard milkshake is going to taste great with a hint of Belgium chocolate, but in actual fact coconut or pistachio would bring out the right note at 35w. This leads us to the next part of our decision tree….
At Twisp we have added two extra layers into our flavour development program - the End User, and Self Regulation.
For our first departure point on our flavour development we identify which type of end user will be using the flavour. The initial question becomes if it is a MTL or STL user, and potentially, is it a Hybrid User? Will the flavour be used in our ATS devices, or would the end user be happy to use an alternative Twisp flavour in their ATS device to compliment their choice? This will decide our base formulation, the PG/VG balance and the type of Nicotine base we use. Not only do we have to take into account the style of vaping, but also the nicotine level, and the intended wattage that the flavour would present itself the best in. This is in part why the Vega has been updated with its [dynamic Boost control.]
The MOST important overarching theme that we have for ANY of our liquids is the adherence to our self-imposed GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice). This is started at component ingredients, through to formulation, manufacture, labelling and bottling.
We run a plethora of tests and checks to ensure that every step in the flavour development conforms to our GMP.
Testing and end user satisfaction is checked and rechecked constantly with extensive focus on safety. Please see my dedicated article on Twisp Flavour Manufacture for an in-depth look at what goes into the manufacture of all our flavours.
