Ah, thanks, I see it now. What I did was to click on his name, then click on his avatar in the window that pops up. That then takes me to a page where there is a box for me to type a message. I assume he doesn't get an alert to let him know someone has left a message on that page. Oh well. Anyhow, I know how to do it now, thanks.
