Hi All,

This is a weird topic... some might misunderstand the reason I am creating the thread. Just bear with me :p

So I had a squizz through the forum rules, it doesn't seem like there are any rules that pertain to swearing or vulgar language. I might have missed a post on this though... don't know if I am correct in stating this.

Now, my question is: I have sworn on the forums before. I feel sometimes it just gives a certain punch to a sentence that the writer wants to stand out, or maybe drive a point more aggressively. This isn't a way to ask permission to swear on the forums, and nor will my usage of vulgar words/phrases or other mannerisms increase. But is it something to steer clear of completely? I don't feel like there is any harm done, and if a user is offended I will obviously apologize.

Please let me know what you guys/gals think on this... Just a casual discussion on what you think is right/acceptable :). Also curious to hear how the mods handle something like excessive swearing or vulgar language

swearing is a simple thing to moderate in my eyes.

general swearing as emphasis or towards an inanimate object - i turn a blind eye.. unless its sailor language which i wont tolerate

swear at a person and i take action!

I have never felt the need to use swear words here (as far as I can recall). English has more than enough other words to express oneself.

That said, if others feel the need, it does not really bother me unless it is really excessive or becomes personal.

And personally? Are you someone that doesn't care for swearing in conversation? Or do the same rules apply?

Yea, can be a contentious issue. On my AVForum, we implemented the option for members to censor swear words or disable it and then they can view the whole fuckin lot if they choose;)

See now this is my point... there was no reason for @BWS to add that little swear word in there, but I did have a lekker giggle at that sentence. Like I said in the original post. This isn't a crusade to permit swearing, just a friendly discussion on whether or not these things are accepted. If they aren't, I would simply have adjusted the way I write my posts.

@BWS I think you and I will get along well ;)

Well I think @mAlice should just f*** off (please don't ban me @shaunnadan !).

I personally don't mind swearing, but know a lot of people that do. Also, in conversation it's a fluid thing, but on a forum, you have the time to corrrect yourself without having to interupt any flow. I don't like to swear on here just because I think it is unneccessary (there are moments where it could be and that is fine), and just brings down the positive energy that makes this forum significantly better than any other one I've been a part of.

i grew up in a household where both of my parents were english teachers and my father went on towards becoming a principal

in my entire life i could count the amount of times i heard swearing in my house on 1 hand and still have fingers to spare!

as best as i can i prefer to choose my words so that i can express myself without the need of swearing.

@Stosta I completely agree with the point brought up that there is time to moderate yourself in posts you make on a forum compared to in a face to face.

EDIT: *Eish I think this thread might have negatively impacted the view a lot of people have on me... too ****** late now :D

Swearing should be banned, as it is a grey area, what is acceptable to me, maybe very offensive to others. Most forums I have been involved in, don't allow swearing.

Personally I don't care either way

that's rather interesting.... personally i couldn't give a flying duck how you choose to express yourself. i have a rule in my office i imposed a year ago that vulgar language will not be tolerated but thats due to it being a professional environment.

not too long ago with some of my peers from the forum i was introduced to a very colorful gentleman. now i can keep up and dish out just as fast as its given but i felt uncomfortable especially with some of the people being my elders that i left the room.

The reason I ask is, personally, I am someone that does swear in conversation. I don't think it is excessive but its not the best idea to invite me to a Catholic gathering... most of my peers swear as well. I think it's a matter of your environment. AND even when I swear, I still don't use all the words at my disposal... I think there are some words better left unspoken.

Yeah I also swear quite a bit. It's difficult because my bosses don't, so occassionaly I go into one of their offices effing this and that and just watch them squirm.

My parents maintain that shit was my first word. I don't believe it but they have made that claim for years. The joke is that my mom says my dad taught it to me, but if you met my parents you could pretty quickly figure out that is a porky pie.

I don't like that I swear as much as I do, it really bugs me. Which is strange because I have no intention of actively trying to stop it.

Thanks for introducing all this self-confusion into my life on a Friday @mAlice :(

well to be quite frank and also my humble opinion - we are all on a vaping enthusiasts forum/group and as such we have conceded that we are all of age, at least 18 years or older, since this is the law i think. We are all adults and can all deal with a swear word now and then, except the following words freak me out:

1) the p word (i just don't like it, it makes something so nice, sound dirty and not so nice)
2) in fact most afrikaans swear words are so much worse than there english counterparts.

Of course I'm not talking about swearing unnecessarily or swearing to much but swearing within bounds based on the set of rules of this forum. That is just my opinion. In real life I swear like a sailor because my English is sheet and I generally cannot think of any other word rather than just dropping the f-bomb. It is easier and suites my brain lag i always experience. I drop the f-bomba lot and if it were a real bomb would be devastating to the whole world. Looking fwd to meeting you guys this weekend, I'm going to wear a t-shirt that reads +18 VSL communicate with this person at own risk :p. Oh and for clarity sake VSL = very strong language, not violence, sex and language...

Good read although I don't know if this holds any water... I don't believe there is any coloration between linguistic skills and overall intelligence. Although what I have realized is that when I am around people that swear (like I do) I feel more at ease. It's like the situation is instantly less tense. Don't know if anyone else has experienced that

the same claims can be said for wit and sarcasm

My folks used to listen to 'Flock of Seagulls'

I always wondered why they were chasing the poor birds away.

i am a person that swears moderately. but i only do it when speaking to my friends. when i speak to strangers or in general other people, i tend not to swear.
its almost like the more comfortable i am with you, the more i will use swear word.
with that being said - to show respect for in general other people i dont swear.
so i think swearing should also not be allowed on the forum.
i dont mind things like substitutions like - wow that a ducking big mod ect.
one word i will use is shit - as i dont see it as a swear word....

As long as it's not hatespeech, I do not care.

BUT

Please do keep in mind that this is a PUBLIC forum. All manners of internet communication are mostly public. AND PERMANENT!
Keep that in mind as you look ahead in life, trying to explain in a job interview what exactly was "so f$@#&^* absurd that only a s&#t-headed moron would ever fall for this p$&s and drivel!"

Remember this, folks. We are living in a digital age now...

I share the same philosophy. If myself and my mates were recorded at a braai after a drink or so, that recording would highly offend church going people :D. But I definitely don't tell me to "go left at the f****n Shell garage on the corner".

Hey guys....

In the words of the Jerry Springer audience....
