What size wick

Hi @shaun patrick , the wick in that link looks like silica to me

I do not have much experience building and wicking with silica, but yes, it does expand slightly I think.
Nevertheless, my feeling would be to use roughly the same diameter coil, ie 2mm coil with 2mm silica.

The challenge with silica is to prepare it properly and getting it inserted in the coil. Also controlling the fraying of the ends. Am not experienced with that but several threads on that on the forum. Perhaps also @Andre could chime in here because he has lots of experience with ceramic, which is similar I think.

In general though, cotton wick tends to expand quite a lot. Rayon doesnt expand. Some say it contracts, thats why one generally packs it tighter.

That is glassfibre wick - I would not recommend that. The best in the silica wick department is Ekowool, but not many stock these nowadays.

Some sock the silica on a mandrel and then wrap the wire around that. Others fold it to double and wrap the wire directly onto the silica. Too tight a wrap will break the silica.

Silica needs to be torched well beforehand to prevent fraying.
